Download the firmware to your desktop and follow these instructions
To conserve battery life turn off all unused services such as Bluetooth SSH 3G etc when not being used. This is made easy with the SBsettings app from Cydia. This applies only to iPad, Iphone and Ipod Touch.
Note: battery life on iOS 4.x with untehered jailbreak is terrible. Battery life on iOS 3.x with jailbreak is excellent.
